2009 Idyllwild Spring Challenge

Windy but fun.

The 2009 Idyllwild Spring Challenge was threatened by a spring storm, with the promise of rain and high winds, but Saturday morning brought nothing more than cool temperatures and gusts of 20mph or so. Our results were similar to last year: Jeff made his way to the podium with a 5th place in Cat 2 45-49, Shane pulled in with a 9th place finish in the same group, and Scott got 1st in Cat 2 50-54. (Click here for a blow-by-blow account of Scott's ride.) As usual, the event was lots of fun. The staff and volunteers are excellent, the competition is pretty strong, and the course is challenging and includes some of the best single track in So. California (in my opinion). This is a real, old-school mountain bike race, and the Cat 2 and Cat 3 course rewards technical climbing skills as much as pure climbing power. If you venture up there for a ride sometime, do not miss Buena Vista, Snakeskin, or the Hombres. You won’t regret it. As usual, more information about Idyllwild trails can be found at http://www.idyllwildcycling.com.
